New Drum Heaters Hit The Market

Having spent the past 15 years working in an industrial warehouse setting, I’ve seen my fare share of 55 gallon drums, heaters, and cold weather issues. I am surprised at the various methods of drum heating equipment I have seen over the years… everything from drum ovens, to band heaters, to insulated covers, to temperature controlled rooms, etc. Equally surprising is the efforts people will go to in heating their industrial materials (especially when they don’t have proper heating equipment). I’ve seen people build fires to heat drums, use propane flames to heat materials, and one guy would pour gasoline into a large tractor tire and set the drum inside the tire before lighting it up. People will go to extreme measures to find ways to produce heat. Nothing surprises me anymore.

The purpose for this article is to better explore current (legal) methods for heating drums, buckets, totes, and cylinders. Drum ovens have long been a favorite method for precisely heating a variety of materials, but has been found to be cost prohibitive for many smaller applications. A new technology that is being utilized in heating and warming drum, buckets, and totes is GreenHeat Technology, owned by a company out of Salt Lake City called Powerblanket.

Powerblanket engineers have developed a heat spreading material that evenly distributes warmth over large areas, completely eliminating troublesome hot & cold spots. Additionally, the Powerblanket touts light weight, portability, low-energy consumption, and extreme durability for use in a variety of construction and industrial settings. We tested the BH55-110 (55 gallon 110° F) electric drum heater and found the blanket to be a very effective method for bringing chemicals and other materials to temperature in record time without burning or overheating the contents of the drum. An internal thermostatic controller regulated the temperature as advertised.

In our opinion, what makes Powerblanket such an innovative product is its effectiveness in heating and a very reasonable price tag. At a retail cost of $465, Powerblanket costs about the same as 2 band heaters and thousands of dollars less than a basic drum oven. It’s ability to heat and insulated drums and barrels make it a “Best Buy” in its heating category. As their slogan states “Wrap it in a Powerblanket and you’ll never use another band heater or blower again” seems to be a pretty fare statement.

Powerblanket makes a complete line of barrel and bucket heaters ranging from 75° F to 200° F with the ability to adjust temperature if desired with an adjustable thermostatic controller. Hands down the most innovative new product we have tested to date.

Powerblanket is located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and distributes through a host of construction and industrial supply houses and e-commerce websites. They can be seen at http://www.powerblanket.com or by calling 877-927-6432.
